When Does ECO4 Start and End?

This article is part of our complete guide to ECO4.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme is an essential programme for low-income and vulnerable households in the UK, which started in July 2022 and is set to end in March 2026. It aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in homes.

ECO4 Start and End Dates

The ECO4 scheme was initially planned to start in April 2022, but it was delayed until 27 July 2022. The programme is set to run until March 2026. However, the government may extend the scheme beyond this date depending on ongoing needs and other factors.

How Long Will ECO4 Last?

ECO4 will last nearly four years, from July 2022 to March 2026. During this period, the scheme aims to improve energy efficiency across the UK, funding improvements for low-income and vulnerable households. The programme’s ongoing availability ensures that as many homes as possible can benefit from various energy-saving measures, including insulation and heating upgrades.

What Came Before ECO4?

The first phase, ECO1, ran from January 2013 to March 2015, focusing on cutting carbon emissions and improving home heating through various obligations. ECO2, which spanned April 2015 to March 2017, continued these efforts with similar targets but increased the scope of work. The ECO2t phase extended the programme through September 2018 to ensure continued support for low-income households. ECO3 ran from December 2018 to March 2022, introducing more focused measures to assist fuel-poor households and a greater emphasis on vulnerable groups.

What Comes After ECO4?

The ECO4 scheme is still available, but discussions about its successor have already begun. A new scheme, possibly named ECO5, is anticipated to follow. While specific details about ECO5 are yet to be confirmed, it is expected to build on the successes of ECO4. Households can expect a continued commitment to cutting carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency across the UK.

Accomplishments of the ECO4 Scheme

Since its inception, the ECO4 scheme has helped eligible households in many ways, including:

  • Improved energy efficiency: Installing insulation, upgrading to efficient heating systems and pursuing other measures reduces energy consumption.

  • Lower energy bills: Enhanced efficiency translates to reduced energy costs for households.

  • Environmental impact: ECO4 contributes to national and global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.

  • Health and comfort: Well-insulated homes are more comfortable and promote good health among older adults, children and people with health problems worsened by cold environments.

Apply for ECO4 Today

If you think you may qualify for ECO4, confirm your eligibility based on income and vulnerability status. Your household may need to receive certain government benefits to qualify for funding, such as Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Income Support (IS). Even if you don’t receive benefits, you might still qualify by way of Local Authority funding.
